I don't have a blog, and don't have time to design a blog, so I'm just going to try to write some things here everyday, since I so enjoy reading my friends' blogs...

I've noticed that I haven't been putting on CDs as much as I used to, even though I have so many of them, so I made a concerted effort to listen to music while I worked on Sunday. Things I listened to:

Bonnie Prince Billy: "I See a Darkness"
Rufus Wainwright: "Want One"
Rufus Wainwright: "Want Two"
U2: "Pop" ( an unusual choice for me)
REM: "Fables of the Reconstruction"
The Postal Service: "Give Up"
Kristen Hersh: "The Grotto"
Compilation by Mr. Hg from March 2004
Devendra Banhart: "Nino Rojo"
Mountain Goats: "Talahassee"
Nick Cave: "Nocturama"

I worked alot on Sunday as you can see...

Will try to get more creative with my entries!

My husband to his stepson, when my husband just arrived home from working this Saturday:

Stepfather: Hey Gav, whatcha' doing!?
Stepson: I'm reading Latin, it makes me feel better.

Stepfather: You're not feeling well?
Stepson: Well, I didn't learn anything yet today, and reading my Latin textbook makes me feel good.

What have I spawned?

....your teenager who sleeps in late on weekends is the one who wakes you up on a Saturday at 11 to make sure you're not dead (or because he's hungry and doesn't feel like making his own breakfast).

... you order breakfast to be delivered because you don't feel like making his or your own breakfast(lox/bagels/cream cheese anyone)?

...it's now approaching dinner time and instead of your family asking you what you ar going to cook, they want to know which place we will order from tonight.

... you're still wearing the same clothes you wore yesterday, because you fell asleep in them and couldn't be bothered to change; and no one in your family seems to think that is strange. Or disgusting.

GAH!

Subject:Bloc Party breaks the curse
Security:Public

For the past month my son Gavin (now 13) had stopped listening to music. Didn’t want his ipod anymore even though he begged me for six months before Christmas to get him one. He announced he no longer liked any music with which he’d previously been obsessed. “I HATE David Bowie”, he announced. “The Scissor Sisters are too techno”. “I can’t believe you named me after a stupid singer”, he said of GF. If I put a CD on in the car he’d try to turn it off. I couldn’t figure out what was going on.

Earlier this week, I put on Bloc Party while driving him to school. This time, he didn’t complain. This time, he didn’t reach to turn down the volume knob. After a few songs, he said, begrudgingly, “this is actually really good”. But he looked extremely upset that he was enjoying this music.

I asked him why he seemed disappointed that the CD was good. Finally, he blurted out “it is not cool to like the same music as your mother”.

Somehow I convinced him that it was o.k. to like the same music as your mom -- if your mom is cool (though he wasn’t entirely ready to concede that designation to me)

So now he is back to ignoring me when he gets home from school, headphones glued to his ears.

Has anyone had a similar experience, either as the parent, or as the child? How does a kid whose mom is “cool” rebel? My worst nightmare would be if he turned into a young republican…

And thank you, Bloc Party!
